Green Lawn is a very special park where past, present, and future blend to create a memorial, a sanctuary – a celebration of life. Organized as a non-profit association in 1848, Green Lawn represents a vast treasure for Columbus historians and bird watchers, and a sanctuary for those seeking a peaceful interlude.
As one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Ohio, Green Lawn serves as the resting place for well known and influential individuals who made significant contributions to Columbus, the state of Ohio and the entire country.
First Saturday Program Intern
This program honors people interred at Green Lawn who had an impact on life in central Ohio. Visits to the gravesite of those recognized are offered after the program. The intern will learn about people buried at Green Lawn and their role in history. Students will learn how to search the card catalogue for dates of death, learn how to use various resources in the library to learn more about the person they have chosen. Students will write articles for the cemetery newsletter, the Heritage; will learn to do an oral presentation and participate in a First Saturday program using information uncovered in their research. Information is also used in tours and in community programs. Students will be invited on the tours and to the presentations.
Some of this research may play a prominent role in work for the upcoming Columbus Bicentennial.
